As Tampa Bay's star center, Mark Carmelo's life was hockey, and after a bitter and public break up, all he wanted to do was focus on the game.
Until he saw her.
The one that got away.
The one he thought he'd never see again.
For thirteen years, Stevie West drowned in her lackluster life.
Recently divorced from her “roommate” with passionless benefits, she was ready
to start over. On her own.
Until she ran into him.
The same man she'd met one year ago.
The temptation that had finally given her the courage to find herself
again.
When lightning strikes twice, there’s no way to deny the chemistry it
creates.
But with both of them still nursing old wounds, Mark and Stevie will
have to find a way around the other's defenses, a way to breakaway and score
the one thing they never expected… love.
MY REVIEW
Mark Caramelo has kept his focus on hockey since his public, humiliating breakup. Then he meets Stevie, spends the evening just talking with and getting to know the unhappily married woman and they part ways, thinking they’ll never see each other again. A year later, newly divorced Stevie has returned home to Tampa and she and Mark reconnect. But after so many years of hiding her true self in a lifeless marriage, she's determined to rediscover herself and make it on her own, and a younger, famous hockey player doesn’t really fit into those plans. Still, there’s something magical between these two, and love seems to happen in spite of the plans.
I had read all of the Avenues Ink series by this author so I was excited to be able to read an advance copy of this book. It’s a bit of a departure, but one thing is sure, Ms. Johnson certainly knows hockey. I love sports romances, and really enjoyed the backdrop of the game and the banter between team members. Mark was the perfect hero, tough and alpha but with a huge heart and not a lot of cocky arrogance. Stevie gets huge points for making the drastic changes needed to take control of her life and be true to herself. I was a little disappointed that the major crisis arose out of rash decisions and misunderstandings, but this was still a great story with a lot of heat, a good bit of heart and a nice dose of humor, and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
