Synopsis

Hillary Dubas has everything she’s ever wanted. A family who loves her, friends who are always there for her, and a successful bakery she’s poured her heart and soul into. The one thing missing is love. Finding her Ever After in her hometown is not so easy, though. In fact, it’s really more of a nightmare. Especially when the only kissing she’s doing is with a man who’s all wrong for her. She knows better than to get too close to a playboy like Trey... Doesn’t she?
When Trey Thompson returned to his hometown to visit his ill grandpa, he never thought he’d stay more than a few weeks. Now here he is, nearly two years later. Still in River Bend. And Hillary—aggravating, exasperating, breathtaking Hillary—is running around town, recklessly dating anything with two feet. Not that he cares. He’s always considered her off limits. So why can’t he keep his hands off her?

 My Review:
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trey and Hillary have known each other most of their lives, ever since his family moved in next door to her grandmother. She’s the one he likes to tease and torment, and he’s the one who can make her scream in outrage one minute and then coax a smile from when she’s down. Some might call them friends. They’ve never thought of the other as relationship material, but somewhere along the line, that slowly begins to change. Maybe it’s because Hillary hasn’t dated anyone recently and her mother keeps harping about marriage and grandchildren. Maybe it’s because Trey might be starting to realize that he just might be worthy of a relationship with someone like Hillary and recognizes that his one night stands are more habit than anything else. Maybe it’s because they both see something more in the other that they’ve never seen before.

This author won me over with Cole and Jaden's story in With Every Breath and I could not wait to read an early copy of this book!  Trey has heartbreak written all over him. He returned home after eight years in the Navy when he found out his grandfather was ill. This is the man who taught him how to be a man. The man who became a father figure when Trey’s father deserted the family. The man who encouraged him to join the Navy and find peace after a family tragedy. His grandfather taught Trey the craft of woodworking and Trey perfected it to an art form, but the infrequent contact with the father who blames Trey for his own failures still has Trey believing he'll never be good enough. Somehow Hillary helps Trey see himself differently.

I couldn’t help but love both of these characters. Hillary is confident, patient and determined, and you only have to see how her family and friends interact with her to know she’s a great gal with a big heart. And Trey, bless his heart. Beneath all the self-doubt and screw ups, his fractured heart is capable of love and kindness, and it was a terrific journey watching him figure this out about himself. It was clear that these two belong together and I was glued to the page, eager to see everything work out. If I have any critique, it’s that the book's climax felt anticlimactic, with a grand gesture that never came to fruition and poignant speeches of undying love left unsaid. Still, watching them get their HEA was definitely satisfying.

I loved the sense of family and community, and the small-town nosiness and interference made for some delightful entertainment! The secondary characters are quirky and hilarious, and added an extra layer of life to the book. What’s not to love about a senior citizen with a sexy romance blog?  This is one of those books that wraps around you like a warm blanket, takes you on a ride of emotional highs and lows, and leaves your heart with a happy sigh at the end. I completely, totally adore these wonderful characters from River Bend and am desperate to get my hands on the next book in the series. The books are standalone, so you can start with this book and then go back and read the first. Don’t miss this wonderful, poignant, evocative, heartfelt, humorous read!

About the Author

Once upon a time, there was a young girl who wrote sappy poetry about every relationship gone wrong. She had her heart broken many times before the man of her dreams stepped off a big Navy ship and swept her off her feet, promising to never hold her shoe obsession against her.
From that day forward, she swore she'd never again write sappy poetry of unrequited love. Instead, a sucker for smooches and happily-ever-afters, Niecey Roy now writes contemporary romance inspired by her sailor's sexy brown eyes and charming sense of humor.
