TGH RD-2

TGH-final

My name is Finn McCowen, and I want my revenge.
Callisto Avellino was the heiress of one of the country’s most influential families. A delicate wildflower in a bed of thorns. And the daughter of the man who killed my father.
Six years ago, she disappeared.
She says she ran away to escape the poison of her corrupt family.
Money. Prestige. Power. Murder.
We have the same agenda - or so it seems: ruin the Avellinos at all costs.
And if I have to put her in harm’s way to get what I want?
So be it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Bravery is “rolling waves. Courage lives at the foamy peaks; fear in every trough.”

If you haven’t read this lady's work yet, you really need to rectify that immediately. Oh, it’s no romp in the park or frolic with puppies, that’s for sure. Yes, it’s dark, but with the rich, delicious decadence of the finest dark chocolate that melts its way into your soul. Her words paint a picture, create a tapestry that wraps around the reader and carries her along in the unstoppable tide of a spellbinding story. A story full of wretchedly flawed, heartbreakingly beautiful, mesmerizing characters, characters who possess the reader until she is powerless but to live and experience and gasp her way through their journey to the final page.

Some things are written in the stars, and Finn and Callisto's lives have been bound and entwined since they were children. Since her father killed his father. Since he first laid eyes on her during a court proceeding when he was eleven and she was five. But it’s not until adulthood that their orbits collide, and what follows is a shocking and twisted but fated journey of revenge, deception, justice and finally, redemption.

Halloran pulled out all the stops on this one, filling the pages with beautiful imagery, chilling foreshadowing, powerful analogies and what I suspect is an eerily accurate portrayal of power, corruption and politics. This story has so much depth and so many layers I still haven’t climbed back out sufficiently to clearly articulate my feelings.

I was already more than a little intrigued by Finn from his previous appearance, but it’s Calli who captivated me, bewitched me and owned my heart. Her courage, strength, determination and sense of right and wrong are both magnificent and humbling and, as you might suspect, she brought Finn to his proverbial knees with no effort at all.

Expect fireworks. It’s a Halloran novel, after all. The chemistry, heat and complicated romance we've come to expect are all present and accounted for, and it’s sinfully delicious. And the metaphor of Calli and Ursa Major? So exquisite and powerful and so darn perfect it still gives me chills.

This is a story full of hidden gems, the kind that the reader mines anew each time she reads the book. With paramount messages as timely today as they will be a hundred years from now, this book goes to the head of my top five reads for the year. Make this book a part of your permanent collection, and then prepare yourself. Once you’ve read TGH, you’ll find yourself raving about it to all your book-loving friends.

“You’re remembering that night,” Finn murmurs. “Your breathing just picked up.”
I yank the phone away from my mouth, but it’s too late. No matter how hard I try, my body won’t forget his.
 And now he knows it.
He sighs. “I’ve tried to forget, too, but you left me a souvenir that’s made it impossible.”
My missing panties. Mortified, I sink to the closed toilet seat and drop my head forward. My voice is shaky. “That’s creepy and gross. Why didn’t you throw them away?”
“I’m probably going to regret this in the morning, just like I regret most of what I say to you…” He sighs, and I imagine the warmth of his breath on my neck. “I kept them because I wanted a reminder.”
My heart in my throat, I whisper, “Of the mistake you made?”
“No, princess.” The gravelly words send make my thighs clench. “Of the best almost-sex of my life, and how badly I want to do it again.”
Like your average mature, level-headed woman, I gasp and hang up.
